Planning a group event or party, especially for the first time, can be daunting. You need to work out how much drink and food to order per person. When it comes to wine or Prosecco or Champagne, the worst outcome, would be to run out early. Toasting the bride and groom or grandma and grandpa’s 50th anniversary with empty glasses would make your party memorable for all the wrong reasons. So, let’s talk about how much wine comes in a case and how to work out how much to order per person.
How many bottles are in a case of wine?
A standard case of wine contains 12 bottles of wine with 750 ml (75cL). This adds up to a total of 9 litres or just shy of 2 gallons of wine per case.
Glasses of wine per 750 ml (75 cL) bottle
The number of glasses per bottle will depend on size of the glasses you use and on using a standard pour per glass.
6 x 125 mL (4.4 oz) glasses
4 x 175 mL (6.1 oz) glasses
3 x 250 mL (8.8 oz) glasses
Let’s assume you are going to use 125 mL glasses.
6 glasses x 12 bottles = 72 glasses per case of wine
How to calculate how many bottles of wine to buy
To work out how much to buy, you will need to take how long the party is and how thirsty your guests are! For example, a 3-hour reception allowing 1 glass of wine per hour or an open bar for thirsty employees looking to let loose.
Half cases of wine
750 ml (75 cL) is the standard bottle size, but some retailers sell half cases containing 6 bottles; however, the bottles are magnums, meaning they contain twice as much. In other words, you can get the same amount of alcohol, but it is in 6 bottles instead of 12.
It is also worth noting that expensive, high-end wines are often sold in cases of six bottles.
Champagne & Prosecco by the case
A standard bottle of Champagne, Prosecco, Crémant or Cava is also 750 mL (75 cL). Champagne comes in various sizes all the way up to the giant Nebuchadnezzar, which is the equivalent to 20 standard bottles. Special-sized bottles are usually sold in different case sizes.
Champagne can have 6 or 12 bottles to a case, it depends.
A standard case of Prosecco is 12 bottles.
Number of glasses in a bottle of Champagne
Champagne glasses come in all shapes and sizes, everything from 114 ml (4 oz) to 227 ml (8 oz) and bigger. Smaller glasses should yield 5-6 glasses per bottle.
